One of the things that irk me most is that people act as if web 2.0, wiki's, enterprise 2.0 and search technology are completely new things that pose problems which are completely new. From a technological point of view this may be true. From a societal and psychological point of view it is not. Basically the technology gives us new opportunities. But the challenges are the same. Who will be able to profit most from this new situation?
Internet gives the individual a lot of opportunity. But the smart large company will be able to influence a lot more than people think. Take a look at Murdoch the man behind Fox News. He has bought MySpace as well as the Wall Street Journal. One low brow look I have a cat sites, the other the creme de la creme of business reporting.
Now Murdoch does not buy these companies, because he likes social media or business reporting. He buys them for the money he can make out of these companies and the influence he buys with it. On the one hand with the normal mass public on the other hand with the financial elite.
So, yes internet is changing things, but those who already have power and money are always in the advantage over those who do not. Basically it is a very useful tool. But it does not determine what you use it for.
