I have been passing some time on g+ and I must say that it is really enjoyable. One of the things that passed in posts is the question what people do on LinkedIn. I noticed that most people only visit when someone wants to connect with them.
Well, there are some other reasons for going to LinkedIn
1. Check who has visited your profile
When I visit I regularly check who has visited my profile. This is especially interesting when you're looking foor new opportunities. Recently I spotted someone who looked at my profile from a media company. I looked at their website and what do you know? They had a job opening which fits my profile. I just had my first interview with them.
2. Groups
LinkedIn has lots of groups. Connected to any subject you can think of. One of my favorite groups is INTP the MBTI personality I am. I also manage my own group PPG Professionals, which has more than 1700 members. In these groups you can ask questions, which other members are more than happy to answer. And creating your own group is of course always an option.
3. Jobs
I have noticed here in the Netherlands that on LinkedIn there are more interesting opportunities when it comes to job openings. Expecially if you work in the online business it is much better than the regular job boards.
4. People who viewed this profile have also viewed...
Type in your own name on LinkedIn and see your profile, then scroll down and see in the bar to the right other people that have been visited. The most interesting are the people that you don't know on this list. It's logical that your closest colleagues are there, but what are those strangers doing there?
5. Send messages
The people on LinkedIn are my rolodex (remember that thing). I use it to contact people in my network about business stuff. Why via LinkedIn, because everyone takes care that their details on LinkedIn are recent. Phones en e-mails change, but the profile on LinkedIn is always available. And the connection can also lookup your details.
All in all 5 useful reasons for visiting LinkedIn next to just updating your details and adding connections. Also adding updates on LinkedIn related to your business undertakings is a good idea. For that having a blog is a good suggestion, but we will talk about that next time.
