Google+ now exists for a little more than 3 years. In that time the searchgiants' social network has been declared dead or a ghost town multiple times. By no less than Forbes, Business Insider, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Techcrunch and the latest in that list is The Guardian. Ironically some of these media outlets now have more followers on Google+ than they do on Facebook. And some of those who wrote negatively are now active users of the plus network. While previously writing about the network and not even being truly active on it.

Also these media now recognize that the demographic on plus is a different one from other networks and now have their own approach when posting. Making use of specific features of this network like the use of gifs (animated images) Hangouts and the close integration with Youtube. So the social network seems to keep rising from the dead.
Social Logins
When it comes to the latest article by the Guardian it is even more ironic that sharing of the article is only second to twitter. Next to that the Guardian offers the option to login with Google+ to comment on the article. Seems as if the writer and the rest of the Guardian are not on the same page. In general Google is very strong when it comes to social logins. A close second with 37% to Facebooks 44%.
$30 Billion zombie
While Google+ is not at the same level as Facebook when it comes to active users worldwide it is in the same ballpark with twitter and LinkedIn. And at this moment LinkedIn and twitter are both valued on the market at around 30 billion dollars. Not a bad achievement then by Google, creating 30 billion worth of business in three years time. Not the 6 million dollar man, but a 30 billion dollar zombie.
The real value of Google+
But unlike the other networks Google+ is not monetized by advertising. Maybe in the future it will be filled with ads, there is no 100% guarantee that it will stay ad free. But for Google the value in Google+ lies in other things. First of all it is the social glue that ties everything together. Sharing your reviews and pictures, working together on Google Docs, commenting on Youtube etc. Secondly the use of all these products delivers valuable data. And if there is one company who shows they can make this data worthwile it is Google.
Fear and loathing
That at the same time is probably the reason of the dislike of the Google+ network. In just 16 years time Google has become a disruptive online force to be reckoned with. There is no way you can not somehow have touchpoint with a Google or Google related product or service. Search, Android, Chrome, gmail and Youtube are places where hundreds of millions people come every day. And then the profits Google creates for itself but also others great and small is astounding. From Samsung to your local SEO agency.
And this causes fear and loathing. Facebook runs on Android. On iPhones Google apps are among the most used apps. When it comes to devices Android and therefore Google services, outpace Windows and iOS combined. So on Google+ are centered al those frustrations that are really about Google as a whole.
The question is how long the storyline of Google+ as a failure can go on? Maybe there will be a silver bullet article but until now it just will not die, it even seems to multiply. Oh well, on to the next article that G+ is dead.
