Yesterday was the Google I/O Keynote to open the conference. It was very interesting. I am not going to summarize the whole event but just give you my opinion and comments on what was talked about broadly. The most important being the focus on mobile and context driven information.
Basically this whole Keynote was about Android, omnipresence or contextualisation and therefore the Star Trek computer. Follow me for a bit on what Google really announced yesterday.
All the Androids!
Android is now being developed for the phone, television, the car, home automation and the Internet of Things. Next to that a majority of the internet (and with that I mean mobile as well as desktop) users are somehow logged into a Google service or using a Google related product. Then take into regard that with their connection with OEMS like Samsung, Sony, Philips etc. they will have home appliances everywhere in stores with Android on it. For example it was also announced that Volkswagen will have Android Auto in all models by 2016.
Star Trek
Then when you know that with the combination of search technology, machine learning and Artificial Intelligence Google offers instant contextualized information you know that the Star Trek computer is near. This is of course Google Now, it is no coincidence that Apple Now most of us are still a bit embarrassed to say "Ok Google" but the better it works the more normal it becomes. Especially when we get replies and actions to natural language questions and movements. Which will be easier to register with all these Android sensors around.
Of course this is not yet the stuff of sci fi utopia's. But when you look at the acquisitions and the development
and research Google is doing then you see that Google is serious about this. The combination of advanced search technology, omnipresent context driven artificial intelligence and devices and raw computer speed will usher in much faster than we expect Star Trek like experiences.
Google(+) Photos
Google Photos is a new app/site spun off from Google+ Photos. Or basically it is Google+ Photos. New stuff is added like limitless photo storage for even higher quality photos. You can select a lot of photos easier. Sharing is a bit easier since you can immediately make a public link to photos. It is interesting, but most of this was already present in the Google+ app in some form. Interestingly the Verge placed a review of the new app. Unfortuntely it was the old Google+ app. This says something about the Verge but also about the perceived differences between Google Photos and Google+ Photos. It also says something about the success of Google+ as incubator of new social media developments. And te success of Google+ whihc was not mentioned during the Keynote. But actually it would be a bad thing to show the success of G+ since that would cause a whole lot of trouble for Google. Many, many, many, many kudo's to +Bradley Horowitz and his team(s) for the wonderful Streams, Photos and Sharing apps and Web experiences. I feel there should be more recognition from the world at large for your achievements. But then agoan let the technology speak for itself, it has to be this way then let it be. Welcome Google Photos, farewell Google+ Photos!
Presentation & Culture
One of the other things I found interesting is the team of people who are responsible for the products and the presentations. A third were women and also a large part were non-white. Next to that presentations were about how Google wanted to make the technology accessible to everyone. Not only the US, but also in emerging economies. I think these are important signals considering you want the next billion to come online. Even though Google's workforce is not as diverse as it could be it does seem af it is acknowledged that to reacht the world the company als must be part and reflection of that world.
Conclusion
All in all a very impressive Keynote which on the one hand was very down to earth on the other hand shows very well where this is heading. The foundation has been put in place, now let's see where this is in 2018! The only thing is that I think Google will need an I/O conference for Marketing and Communication. So many people worldwide are and will be involved in Google related product that it would be a good idea if Google would share their vision once year at a conference. On the other hand maybe not, because I think that if they would share it too explicitly it would cause a shitstorm from here to Tokyo.
